We all know that PE is a lightweight, corrosion-resistant material, and now, with Polycon’s latest technology, it offers UV-resistant storage. Most polyethylene tanks are susceptible to UV degradation when exposed to sunlight. That is why they must be pigmented or chemically treated to block harmful UV.
Polyethylene is well known for its natural resistance to chemical corrosion and rust. However, radiation can break molecular bonds when exposed directly to sunlight. This leads to loss of flexibility and microcracking. The plastic becomes brittle and hard, leading to structural failure and even leakage.
Making Polyethylene UV-Resistant
For PE to withstand outdoor exposure, it requires specific additive treatment during the rotomolding process. Carbon black pigmentation is regarded as a UV inhibitor, and compounding it into a resin makes it highly effective against UV radiation and protects the tank from the sun. UV stabilizers and chemical inhibitors are incorporated into the resin to inhibit polymer degradation. It must be noted, though, that colour itself does not offer protection against UV rays. It has to be compounded to protect the tank.
Why UV-resistant tanks?
Engineered specifically to prevent the sun’s rays from breaking chemical bonds, UV-resistant polyethylene tanks with resin treatment retain their flexibility and extend their outdoor lifespan. Polyethylene is popular due to its light weight, cost-effectiveness, and resistance to corrosion. Those trying to install outdoor tanks for storage should avoid natural or unprotected polyethylene. Use the built-in protection to prevent fading, chalking, and material failure.
Polycon’s UV-Resistant Polyethylene Storage Tanks
The UAE’s heat typically calls for additional consideration due to the UV toll on storage tanks. Finding solutions to maintain the tank’s structural integrity is imperative. Whatever your industry, if you are exposing your tanks to sunlight for prolonged periods, you can expect them to break down due to overheating and expansion. The degradation can result in water spoilage and disposing of chemicals, which can be very costly.
Polycon recommends UV-resistant Polyethylene from the start because we prioritize durability and safety above all else. We bring tanks built for the toughest seasons in the UAE, which can otherwise break carbon-hydrogen bonds, leading to a more brittle polymer. You can customize the tanks when you order from us – we give you the black pigment for lasting summer storage of your product, as it blocks sunlight. Our engineers go a step further to ensure the longevity of our linear polymer products and tanks with a compounded UV stabilizer that protects the tank and its contents from degradation.
